Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain which are bonded on to the front side of the teeth so as to make a change in their appearance. They are often used to idealise teeth that are discoloured, worn, chipped, misaligned or slightly spaced. Dental crowns are shells of porcelain, porcelain overlaid onto metal, or sometimes all gold, (depending on the position in the mouth and the ‘hardness’ of the bite), which are either bonded or cemented over the top of a tooth which has been specially reduced in size for the process, so as to strengthen a tooth which has been weakened by large fillings, or alter the appearance, shape or alignment.
